Rexy and the Four Steps to Friendship by Julie Sugarman and Mary Ruppert, Design by Erica Dei

A delightfully illustrated book about a dinosaur named Rexy and how he learns the four steps to friendship.  A good tool for teachers and parents or anyone in a therapeutic, scholastic, or parental setting.  Perfect for preschool and kindergarten children.

A Review by Carol L. Skolnick
A fun and funny way to teach kids how to resolve conflicts and better express their feelings.

Hilarious, delightful and true to life! Young children will instantly recognize the situation in the story and understand that Rexy the T-Rex is being selfish and cranky because he feels scared, worried, overwhelmed and perhaps a tad ashamed. They will undoubtedly appreciate the honesty, humor and warmth of the text as well as the funny and adorable cartoon illustrations. It’s a reassuring tale with characters who are good and supportive friends, who have a good teacher to help them reach resolution. As for me, I laughed out loud in recognition of my own foibles and those I experienced as a child, as well as at some of the “in-jokes,” such as the humorous titles of the books the characters are reading. Kids will enjoy being in on the jokes as well, as they learn the “four steps”: easily duplicatable, non-preachy suggestions of how to be a better communicator and friend. This unique and engaging book would be a worthy addition to any preK-1 classroom bookshelf, library, child therapist’s office, and of course, at home.
