SANDER M. (SANDY) ABEND, M.D. was a New York City native, who earned a BA from the University of Louisville, and subsequently his MD from the University of Chicago. He had a residency in psychiatry at Albert Einstein / Bronx Municipal Hospital. After active duty in the U.S. Navy in Japan, he returned to New York and opened an individual private practice in Manhattan. He then received psychoanalytic training at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, where he soon joined the faculty and was later appointed a Training and Supervising Analyst. He became a member of the Editorial Board of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, where he also served for several years as Editor-in-Chief.
