Inside Out: Intimate Voices Stories by Irene Cairo
$14.95
“These remarkable stories from Irene Cairo have been there when I needed them—during sleepless nights as well as before a good night’s sleep, when I had a daytime break or was relaxing on a vacation afternoon. I found myself sometimes unable to stop laughing and sometimes unable to breathe, at descriptions of politics and people during the dark days of dictatorship, and, throughout, noticing Cairo’s sustained commitment,
across time and space, to parenthood, marriage, friendship, and family.” — NANCY CHODOROW, author, The Psychoanalytic Ear and the Sociological Eye, and The Power of Feelings, and other works
“Irene Cairo is two people in one: a brilliant psychoanalyst and a gifted writer. This remarkable alchemy results in stories with everything from meaning to mirth. Each tale reaches into your heart, soul, and psyche. Cairo’s insights and humanity suffuse every page leaving a lasting impression. You will read this book again and again.”
—BONNIE MASLIN, PHD, author, Loving Men for the Right Reasons and Not Quite Paradise: Making Marriage Work
From the INTRODUCTION BY OWEN RENIK, MD: The best short story writers engage you in a way that makes you, without realizing it, eager to learn what will happen next—and then, ultimately, surprise you. Irene Cairo is one of them. Her stories are page turners. They’re suspenseful, but not because they are action packed in the traditional sense. They move right along. partly because of the fluidity of Cairo’s prose and partly because of her wonderful ear for internal monologue.
INSIDE-OUT: Intimate Voices Irene Cairo These stories evolved over many years and thus reflect very different moments and moods. Some are light and funny. Some are dramatic, even tragic. But I do trust that the
beginning paragraphs of each, will give some idea of the road ahead. I wish I could dialogue with each of you readers. I invite you to dialogue with me in the imagination.
